As soon as your phone reconnects to cellular towers or marina Wi-Fi, the entries automatically upload and sync with your connected dive buddies."
---

To **log scuba dives quickly** during surface intervals, you need a mobile workflow designed for wet hands, rocking decks, and tight timelines. Instead of struggling with pen and paper or wrestling with complex 30-field forms, modern digital logging lets you record maximum depth, bottom time, and tank pressure in under twenty seconds. Platforms like [Depthlog](https://depthlog.net) streamline this process by pre-filling gear profiles, calculating residual nitrogen automatically, and synchronizing dive parameters directly to your buddy's profile.

Taking full advantage of modern mobile tools ensures your log history stays accurate and complete without interrupting the social atmosphere or the relaxation of your surface interval.

## Why post-dive logging friction ruins dive records

Every diver knows the post-dive routine on a busy charter boat. You exit the water, strip off your fins, unclip your regulator, and sit down on a wet bench while the crew prepares tanks for dive two. In theory, this is the exact moment to record your dive profile while numbers remain fresh in your mind.

In reality, traditional logging methods create immediate friction. Paper logbooks become soggy, ink smears across the paper, and physical stamps run dry. If you postpone logging until you return to your hotel room or dive shop hours later, critical details blur together. Maximum depths get rounded off, exact bottom times are forgotten, and tank start and end pressures are reduced to vague guesses.

Spreadsheets present a different set of challenges. While a custom spreadsheet solves physical durability issues, typing small numbers into tiny cells on a mobile phone while the boat rolls over swells leads to constant mis-taps and frustration. Divers end up abandoning their logs entirely, leaving massive multi-week gaps in their diving histories.

## How to log scuba dives quickly in three taps

Capturing accurate dive telemetry between boat runs does not require thirty distinct data fields. In recreational diving, approximately 80% of your gear and profile settings remain identical from one dive to the next on the same day.

A boat-optimized digital scuba logbook takes advantage of this repetition by persisting your active configuration across consecutive entries. Here is how a streamlined three-tap workflow records an entire dive in under twenty seconds:

1. **Tap 1: Select the active site and time.** Opening the mobile interface defaults to your current geographic location, local time, and your primary gear profile (such as your cold-water 7mm setup or tropical travel kit).
2. **Tap 2: Enter core metrics.** You enter just three numbers from your dive computer and pressure gauge: maximum depth, total runtime, and starting versus ending cylinder pressure.
3. **Tap 3: Confirm and sync.** Tapping save immediately updates your profile, runs mathematical decompression checks, recalculates surface intervals, and pushes the shared dive log to your buddy.

By isolating the absolute necessities from optional narrative notes, you preserve clean data without turning your surface break into clerical desk work.

| Log method | Time required per dive | Durability on boats | Buddy validation | Gas and nitrogen calculations |
| :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- |
| Paper logbook | 3 to 5 minutes | Very low (paper tears and smears) | Manual ink stamp or signature | Manual lookup using paper dive tables |
| Mobile spreadsheet | 2 to 4 minutes | High (cloud saved) | None | Requires manual formula creation |
| Manufacturer desktop app | 5 to 10 minutes (cable/Bluetooth required) | Dependent on laptop or sync hardware | None | Device dependent |
| Fast digital logbook | Under 20 seconds | High (native mobile web interface) | Automatic profile synchronization | Instant SAC rate and tissue compartment estimation |

## The power of automated buddy profile synchronization

One of the largest time drains during post-dive logging is redundant data entry between dive pairs. When two divers follow the same dive master or guide along the same reef wall, their core operational metrics are virtually identical:

- Water temperature and thermocline depth
- Entry time, exit time, and total bottom time
- Maximum depth and average depth profile
- Exposure suit and thermal protection
- Dive site coordinates and environmental conditions

Under an automated buddy synchronization system, only one diver needs to input the environmental data. When you tag your diving buddy in your digital entry, the system instantly duplicates the operational parameters into their private log.

Your buddy receives an immediate notification to review the dive. All that remains for them to input is their individual tank pressures (starting bar or PSI and ending reserve), individual weight ballast, and personal equipment notes. Buddy verification becomes a matter of confirming the entry with a single press, ensuring both divers maintain identical, validated logs without double the effort.

## What essential metrics should you record on the boat?

When your objective is maximum speed between dives, you must prioritize the data points that impact diver safety and future dive planning. You can always add subjective thoughts, marine life sightings, or underwater photography notes later from the comfort of land.

While on the vessel during your surface interval, focus exclusively on these critical variables:

### Maximum depth and bottom time
These two figures determine your nitrogen tissue loading. Entering them right away allows the system to determine your repetitive group designation and track surface interval decompression credit accurately.

### Gas pressures and Surface Air Consumption
Recording starting cylinder pressure and reserve cylinder pressure lets your software calculate your Surface Air Consumption (SAC) rate and Respiratory Minute Volume (RMV). Tracking your gas consumption over time helps you evaluate improvements in buoyancy control, finning efficiency, and trim.

### Ballast and thermal protection
Record the exact weight you carried alongside the thickness of your wetsuit or drysuit undergarments. If you were slightly positive at your safety stop or struggling to descend at the surface, make a one-second note of your ballast adjustment before you forget.

## Web-based dive software versus proprietary computer apps

Many modern dive computers feature proprietary mobile applications paired via Bluetooth. While transferring full dive curves directly from your wrist unit is convenient, relying solely on manufacturer software presents distinct disadvantages for active recreational divers.

### Hardware lock-in
Dive computer manufacturers design their apps around their own hardware ecosystem. If you dive with one brand of wrist computer but your backup console or secondary computer comes from a different brand, you end up maintaining fragmented logs across separate, walled-off applications. If you upgrade your computer in two years, migrating your past dive history between incompatible formats is often impossible.

### Cloud accessibility and cross-platform flexibility
A cloud-native web application works across any device without requiring proprietary drivers, specialized cable connections, or flaky boat-deck Bluetooth pairing routines. You can access [Depthlog](https://depthlog.net) from an iPhone, an Android tablet, or a shared laptop at the dive center counter simply by signing in.

### Integrated planning engines
Manufacturer companion apps rarely include robust recreational planning tools. They function primarily as profile viewers. In contrast, modern web dive platforms provide forward-looking tools such as multi-level repetitive dive planning, Nitrox maximum operating depth calculations, and centralized certification vaults alongside your historical dive logs.

## Keep your log history clean without complex forms

Logging your dives should never feel like an administrative burden that pulls you away from the joy of being on the water. By transitioning away from fragile paper pages and clunky spreadsheets, you can turn logging into an effortless twenty-second ritual.

Capturing accurate operational data, syncing shared records with your buddy, and tracking your surface intervals in real time keeps your diving history pristine, compliant, and genuinely useful for all your future underwater adventures.

To streamline your dive logging workflow and start recording boat dives in seconds, explore the tools available at [Depthlog](https://depthlog.net).

"learn/how-to-log-scuba-dives-quickly-between-boat-intervals",[343,344],"blog","app","f1gAvkaOBymGZGviMaEjMIdjwX2X7Iibxd8zcqJWk24",[347,680,848,1247
"learn/learn/digital-logbook-revolution.md","Digital Dive Log Revolution: The Complete Guide to Modern Scuba Diving Documentation","Otto Paakko","/assets/avatars/otto_paakko.jpg","Founder of Deepbluecoast
[355,359,369,372,374,380,384,398,404,408,417,431,435,441,449,457,465,469,475,480,484,492,495,499,503,509,520,523,527,533,547,550,552,558,577,591,605,619,627],[33,356,358
daily-challenges-in-scuba-diving","Daily Challenges in Scuba Diving",[13,360,361,362,365,366,368],{},"Let's face it - keeping track of your diving life isn't always smooth sailing.",[363,364],"br",{},"
Ever showed up at a dive center only to realize you left your certification card at home?",[363,367],{},"
Or tried to remember that amazing dive spot you visited last summer, but can't find the crumpled logbook page where you wrote it down?",[13,370,371],{},"These are just everyday headaches for divers. This couldn't be further from the truth.

A well-maintained diving logbook is your personal underwater journal, performance coach, and safety guardian all rolled into one.

Think about your favorite dive. Perhaps it was that magical moment when you first encountered a manta ray, or when you successfully navigated through challenging currents. Now imagine having not just the memory, but a detailed record of the conditions that made that dive possible: the perfect weight configuration that gave you ideal buoyancy, the exact exposure suit that kept you comfortable, the depth at which you found that sweet spot of neutral buoyancy.

This is the power of a diving logbook.

### Performance Tracking and Skill Development

Your logbook serves as a mirror reflecting your evolution as a diver. By meticulously recording each dive, you create a powerful tool for self-improvement. Consider your air consumption – one of the most critical aspects of diving. By tracking this metric across different dives, you can observe how your breathing efficiency improves over time, how it varies with depth, and how different conditions affect your air usage.

This data becomes invaluable when planning future dives. It's like having a personal diving coach who knows your every strength and area for improvement.

::tip
Knowing your typical air consumption rate in various conditions helps you make informed decisions about dive planning, especially when exploring new environments or attempting more challenging dives.
::

### Safety and Experience

Beyond personal development, your logbook is your diving resume. It tells the story of your underwater journey, documenting every skill mastered, every environment explored, and every challenge overcome.
This documentation becomes crucial when attempting technical dives or pursuing advanced certifications. Dive operators and instructors can quickly assess your experience level and comfort in different conditions, ensuring you're properly matched with dives that suit your capabilities.

The safety implications extend beyond qualification. By recording details about equipment configurations, weights used, and environmental conditions, you create a reliable reference for future dives.

This information can be life-saving when diving in similar conditions or when returning to a site after a long interval.

### Document your journey

The human memory is fascinating but fallible. Years after a dive, you might remember the excitement of seeing a whale shark, but what about the specific conditions that made that encounter possible?

A detailed logbook preserves these precious details – the time of year, the water temperature, the current conditions, even the name of the dive guide who knew exactly where to look.

These records become increasingly valuable as you accumulate more dives and visit diverse locations. They help you plan return trips, recommend sites to fellow divers, and relive your adventures with surprising clarity.

::note
Each log entry becomes a chapter in your personal underwater story, complete with all the technical and emotional details that made each dive special.
::

## The Evolution of Dive Logging: From Paper to Digital

Traditional paper logbooks have been the standard for decades, carrying with them a certain nostalgic charm.

There's something satisfying about that physical signature from your dive master, the stamps from different dive centers, and the ability to flip through pages of adventures. **However, this traditional approach comes with significant limitations that can impact both safety and enjoyment of the sport.**

- Paper logbooks are vulnerable to water damage, despite waterproof covers and careful handling.
- They can be lost or damaged, taking with them years of diving history.
- The fixed space constraints often force divers to abbreviate or omit important details, and calculating statistics becomes increasingly time-consuming as the number of dives grows.
- Sharing experiences or getting remote verification from dive professionals is impractical, limiting the social aspect of our sport.

The first wave of digital solutions attempted to address these issues but introduced new challenges. **Many applications prioritized technical functionality over user experience, resulting in complicated interfaces that discouraged regular use.**

Desktop-only solutions made it difficult to log dives on the go, while limited cloud synchronization meant data remained trapped on single devices. These applications, many of which haven't kept pace with modern technology, left divers wanting more.

## Embracing Modern Solutions

::tip
Today's diving community deserves better tools that match the sophistication of modern diving.
::

::card{title="Explore Depthlog now 🤿" to="/" target="_blank"}
A seameless user experience meets advanced functionalities.
Give it a try!
::

Web-based platforms now offer comprehensive solutions that transform how we track our diving journey.

With **automatic statistics calculation, easy sharing capabilities, global dive mapping, and secure certification storage**, these platforms eliminate the hassles of traditional logging methods while adding powerful new features.

Whether you're planning your next dive trip, analyzing your performance, or simply wanting to share your underwater adventures with friends, modern diving platforms make it effortless to take your diving experience to the next level.

"learn/scuba-diving-logbook-guide",[343,344],"tBymFP7vL1COCefEDI4sPTSA-758pG8UUwvvn0TFDTk
"learn/learn/how-to-analyze-your-scuba-dive-logs.md","Analyze scuba dive logs: improve air consumption, depth & time for skill mastery
[853,858,861,864,868,878,881,885,892,896,899,903,911,914,934,937,941,944,976,983,987,994,998,1001,1021,1025,1028,1031,1057,1061,1068,1072,1075,1086,1090,1093,1115,1118,1122,1125,1134,1184,1194,1198,1201],[854,855,857],"h1
how-to-analyze-your-scuba-dive-logs-for-skill-improvement-a-deep-dive-into-air-consumption-depth-and-time","How to analyze your scuba dive logs for skill improvement: a deep dive into air consumption, depth, and time",[13,859,860],{},"Every scuba dive is an adventure, a unique journey into an alien world. But beyond the breathtaking sights and exhilarating sensations, each dive also offers a wealth of data – data that, when properly analyzed, can transform you into a more skilled, safer, and more efficient diver. Your dive log is more than just a souvenir album; it's a powerful personal performance coach waiting to be unleashed. By meticulously tracking and understanding key metrics like air consumption, depth profiles, and dive times, you unlock the secrets to refining your underwater techniques and truly mastering the art of diving.

Imagine having a detailed blueprint of your underwater habits, revealing exactly where you excel and where you can grow. This isn't just for seasoned professionals; it's for every diver eager to elevate their game, from recreational enthusiasts exploring local reefs to experienced adventurers tackling advanced sites. In this guide, we'll take a deep dive into how to leverage your dive logs to gain invaluable insights, turning raw data into actionable strategies for continuous improvement.

## The Power of Your Dive Log

For many, a dive log might seem like a simple formality – a place to get a stamp or a signature. However, its true value lies in its potential as a **learning tool**. Each entry records not just the "what" of your dive, but crucial details about the "how" and "why." A well-maintained logbook serves as a mirror, reflecting your evolution as a diver, documenting every skill mastered and every challenge overcome. It’s a comprehensive record that helps you not only relive memories but also **systematically improve**.

Traditional paper logbooks, while charming, often fall short in offering the depth of analysis modern divers need. They can be prone to damage, limit space for detailed notes, and make statistical calculations tedious. This is where digital platforms like Depthlog shine, transforming how we track our diving journey by offering a seamless user experience combined with advanced functionalities for analysis.

## Mastering Air Consumption

One of the most critical aspects of diving is managing your air supply. Your **air consumption rate** is a direct indicator of your comfort, efficiency, and overall skill underwater. Improving it means longer, more relaxed dives and enhanced safety.

### What is Surface Air Consumption (SAC)?

Your Surface Air Consumption (SAC) rate is a standardized measurement representing the volume of breathing gas you consume per minute at the surface (normalized to one atmosphere of pressure). It's typically expressed in liters per minute (L/min) or cubic feet per minute (psi/min). Understanding your SAC rate is foundational for accurate dive planning and assessing your efficiency.

### How to Compute Your SAC Rate

To estimate your SAC, you first need to calculate the total amount of air you consumed during a dive. A common approach for this involves the ideal gas law, which provides a relatively accurate estimation for standard diving conditions. Digital platforms, such as Depthlog, simplify this process by calculating your SAC using true consumption based on average dive depth and pressure, giving you a more precise understanding of your usage. You can compute your SAC accurately using our [advanced SAC computer](https://depthlog.net/computers/sac).

The basic formula for ideal gas consumption often involves:

1. **Starting Pressure (PSI/Bar) - Ending Pressure (PSI/Bar)**: This tells you how much pressure was consumed from your tank.
2. **Tank Volume (Liters or Cubic Feet)**: The capacity of your cylinder.
3. **Average Depth (Meters/Feet)**: Used to determine the average ambient pressure during your dive.

With these values, an application can then compute your consumption and normalize it to the surface, giving you your SAC rate.

### Tips for Improving Your SAC Rate

Analyzing your SAC rate over multiple dives allows you to identify trends and make targeted improvements:

- **Practice Buoyancy Control**: Excellent buoyancy is key. Being over-weighted or under-weighted leads to excessive finning or air adjustments, both of which increase air consumption. Fine-tune your weights depending on your gear and dive type.
- **Streamline Your Gear**: Reduce drag by ensuring your equipment is compact and secure, preventing unnecessary effort against water resistance.
- **Slow Down and Relax**: Panic or rushing drastically increases breathing. Consciously slowing your movements and maintaining a calm, steady breath will significantly lower your consumption.
- **Maintain Physical Fitness**: Regular physical activity and a healthy body improve cardiovascular efficiency, leading to lower air consumption.
- **Stay Warm**: Diving in cold water increases your body's metabolic rate, burning more energy and thus more air. Choose appropriate exposure protection, like a well-fitting wetsuit, to stay comfortable.

Platforms like Depthlog provide **advanced statistics** that track your SAC rate across all your dives, allowing you to visualize how these factors influence your performance over time and celebrate your improvement.

## Decoding Depth Profiles

Your **depth profile** — the graphical representation of your dive's depth over time — is a treasure trove of information about your planning, execution, and safety.

### Understanding Depth Patterns

Dive computers and digital logs typically record your depth every few seconds, painting a clear picture of your underwater journey:

- **Square Profiles**: Staying at a relatively consistent depth throughout the dive. While simple, it might not be the most efficient for NDLs (No Decompression Limits) as the deepest point dictates the overall NDL.
- **Multi-level Profiles**: Gradually ascending throughout the dive, allowing for longer bottom times by taking advantage of shallower NDLs later in the dive. This is often more efficient.
- **Sawtooth Profiles**: Frequent ascents and descents. This can be less safe, as repeated changes in depth increase nitrogen loading and the risk of decompression sickness.

### How Depth Affects NDLs and Gas Consumption

The deeper you go, the higher the ambient pressure, and consequently, the faster your body absorbs nitrogen and the more air you consume with each breath. At 30 meters (approximately 4 atmospheres), you'll use about twice as much breathing gas as you would at 10 meters (2 atmospheres) for the same amount of time.

Analyzing your log's depth profile helps you:

- **Optimize NDLs**: By understanding how your depth profile impacts your [NDLs](https://depthlog.net/resources/no-decompression-limits-table), you can plan multi-level dives that maximize your bottom time safely.
- **Manage Air Supply**: Deeper dives demand more air. Your log helps you correlate depth with air consumption, allowing for better planning of deep dives.
- **Identify Risky Habits**: Frequent "sawtooth" patterns or rapid ascents are easily visible in your depth profile, prompting you to refine your buoyancy and planning.

## Optimizing Dive Time

Beyond just enjoying the moment, understanding your **dive time** in relation to depth and air consumption is crucial for maximizing your underwater experience and safety.

### Balancing Dive Time with NDLs and Air

Your log provides the data to evaluate how effectively you balanced these three critical factors on each dive:

- Did you surface with ample air, or did you cut your dive short due to low pressure?
- Did you bump against your NDLs unnecessarily, or did you make efficient use of your allotted bottom time?
- By comparing dive times at similar depths and conditions, you can see how your air consumption and NDL management evolve. This helps you develop a better "feel" for how long you can comfortably and safely stay down.

### Analyzing Repetitive Dives and Surface Intervals

For divers enjoying multiple dives in a day, your log is indispensable for managing repetitive dives:

- **Surface Intervals**: Recording your surface intervals helps you understand how they impact nitrogen off-gassing and subsequent [NDLs](https://depthlog.net/resources/no-decompression-limits-table). Longer surface intervals generally mean more bottom time on your next dive.
- **Dive Planning**: Your log provides historical data on how previous dives affected your [NDLs](https://depthlog.net/resources/no-decompression-limits-table), allowing you to plan subsequent dives more conservatively and safely.

Each log entry becomes a chapter in your personal underwater story, complete with the technical and emotional details that make each dive special. With a digital logbook, you can easily access and compare these chapters to plan future adventures more effectively.

## Bringing It All Together with Digital Tools

The true power of analyzing your dive logs for skill improvement comes alive with modern digital platforms. This guide provides a scientific approach to calculating your true SAC, empowering you to better plan your dives, improve air efficiency, and enhance overall safety.

When you dive into deeper waters, the surrounding pressure increases due to the weight of the water column above you. This is what we call hydrostatic pressure, and depends on the height and density of the fluid column above you.

Water can be considered an incompressible fluid, thus its density is not influenced by pressure, only slightly by its temperature and molecular composition.

For instance, water density increases with salinity and at colder temperatures.
Lowering the water temperature increases its density until it changes phase and becomes ice, causing a sharp decrease in density (a very unique behaviour!).

As you dive deeper into the ocean, considering a constant water temperature, the pressure builds up in a surprisingly simple way: for every 10 meters you descend, you'll feel another atmosphere of pressure squeezing in on you.
Your scuba gear is an engineering marvel that adapts to these changing pressures. Your regulator automatically adjusts to deliver breathing gas at the same pressure as your surroundings.

However, gases, unlike water, are highly compressible fluids. As pressure increases, gas molecules pack more tightly together, increasing density. Thus, the deeper you go the more breathing gas molecules you enhale with each breath!

::note
At 30 meters depth (approximately 4 atm), you'll use about twice as much breathing gas as you would at 10 meters (2 atm).
::

## How to calculate true consumption

Understanding your personal consumption rate is crucial for several reasons:

- It enables accurate dive planning
- Enhances safety margins
- Helps prevent potentially dangerous out-of-air situations.

By normalizing the amount of breathing gas a diver consumes by the diving time and average dive pressure, we obtain the **Surface Air Consumption (SAC)**: a standardized measurement which serves as a foundational metric for calculating a diver true air consumption at various depths.

The SAC represents the volume in liters of breathing gas a diver consumes per minute while at the surface, normalized to one atmosphere of pressure (101325 Pa) and is expressed as

$$
\\mathrm{SAC} = \\frac{C_\\mathrm{tot}}{T_\\mathrm{imm} ~ P_\\mathrm{m}}
$$

where $C_\\mathrm{tot}$ is the consumed breathing gas expressed in liters, $T_\\mathrm{imm}$ is the dive time in minutes and $P_\\mathrm{m}$ is the average surrounding pressure of the dive, which can be simply estimated from the average dive depth.
::tip
The first step in estimating the SAC is calculating how many liters of breathing gas you consumed during the dive.
::

### Simple method: ideal gas

A simple way of approaching this estimation can be assuming that the breathing gas behaves like an ideal gas and thus follows the ideal gas law

$$
P = \\rho~ R~ T
$$

where $R$ is the specific constant of the breathing gas, $T$ is the temperature, $\\rho$ is the gas density and $P$ is the pressure.
Assuming constant gas temperature in the tank, the density is correlated to the pressures and thus a good approximation of total consumption is

$$
C_\\mathrm{tot} = V_\\mathrm{tank} ~ (P_1 - P_2)
$$

where $P_1$ and $P_2$ are the initial and final pressures in the air tank.

### Advanced method: real gas

In reality, there is no such thing as an ideal gas, rather there are gasses that behave very similarly to an ideal gas for a specific range of thermodynamic conditions.
The ideal gas behaviour is characterized by the [compressibility factor](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compressibility_factor){target="\\_blank"}

$$
Z = \\frac{P}{\\rho~ R~ T}
$$

being very close to $1$.

Air, nitrox and similar breathing gas mixtures, for instance, behave very similarly to an ideal gas for a wide range of pressure and temperature conditions. For these gasses, the compressibility factor is very close to unity, sometimes slightly lower (at lower pressures) other times slightly higher (for high pressures and a full tank at 200+ atm).

::note
For standard diving tank pressures (200 to 50 atm), standard water temperatures (10-30 °C) and common gas mixtures such as air or Nitrox up to 40%, the ideal gas law can be applied with relatively small margins of error and is still a valid option for quick calculations.
::

This consumption calculation is reported in the Depthlog calculator as "ideal consumption", using thus the ideal gas law.
While some sophisticated diving calculators try to account for the compressibility factor, they're not telling the whole story. These tools miss two important factors: the way temperature affects gas behavior and the fact that the compressibility is not linear with pressure. [This article](https://thetheoreticaldiver.org/wordpress/index.php/2017/11/02/when-real-gas-corrections-matter/){target=\\_blank} reports the methodology used by [Subsurface](https://subsurface-divelog.org/){target=\\_blank} and tends to underestimate the true SAC by errors that are sometimes larger than the ideal gas method.

The true mass of consumed breathing gas $M_g$, assuming real gas behaviour, is defined by the following equation

$$
M_g = \\int_P \\frac{ \\mathrm{d}P }{Z~ R~ T}~ V_\\mathrm{tank}~ 10^{-3}
$$

where the value of the compressibility factor $Z$ depends on the breathing gas composition, temperature and pressure (Pascal).

The integral of the equation can be numerically solved using a trapezoidal integration approximation assuming that the gas temperature $T$ in the tank is constant throughout the dive.

For each pressure segment of the trapezoidal integration routine, the compressibility factor $Z$ is estimated from a linear interpolation of tabular data obtained using the most accurate equation of state in literature (_[reduced Helmholtz free energy formulation](https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0378381299002629){target=\\_blank}_).

The tables of gas mixture properties, including density and compressibility factor, have been generated for air and Nitrox mixtures at varying percentages of $\\mathrm{O}_2$ concentration, varying temperatures from 10 to 30 degrees Celsius, and pressures from 0.1 to 25 MegaPascals (1 to 250 bar).

The total mass of breathing gas consumed can then be converted to a volume (in liters) simply by dividing it by its density at sea level static standard conditions

$$
C_\\mathrm{tot} = \\frac{M_g}{\\rho(T=\\mathrm{25~°C}, P=1~\\mathrm{atm})}.
$$

::tip
Depthlog calculates the SAC using the true consumption and average dive depth which determines the average dive pressure.
::

### What causes my SAC to change?

As divers, we should always be aware of the dive type and conditions when planning it.

For instance, diving in cold waters or against the current can significantly affect our breathing gas consumption because of the metabolic rate increase and physical activity.
Both of these increase the oxygen requirement of our body.

It is thus important to calculate our SAC for each dive and then assess how it changes depending on the diving conditions. It is also important to track how our SAC changes over time and over different dives as our consumption is influenced by factors external to the type of dive, such as our experience as a diver, our health condition and our training.

**Note that [Depthlog](/login){target=\\_blank} tracks your true SAC for every dive over time, you can check the SAC trend in your personal profile dashboard.**

## Automatically calculate your true SAC with Depthlog
While understanding SAC computation is crucial, utilizing the right tools can significantly enhance your dive analysis. Breathing gas mixtures such as Air and Nitrox behave very similarly to an ideal gas in most dive conditions, **though they are not ideal gasses!**
::

::row
#icon
:icon-simple{name="material-symbols:check-circle-rounded" class="text-success"}
#text
While your consumption during a dive depends on the time spent underwater and average depth, your SAC only depends on your physical conditions, such as your body's reaction to cold temperatures and your oxygen consumption during physical activity
::

**You should try to reduce your average SAC over time!**

Tips for doing so include:

- Doing physical activity regularly and keeping a healthy body
- Carefully choose the wetsuit type to avoid feeling cold during dives
- Fine-tune your weights depending on the scuba gear and dive type: being too heavy or too light will cause excessive finning.

::author-about
#body
Fabio is a PhD candidate in the Propulsion & Power group of the aerospace engineering faculty at [Delft University of Technology](https://www.tudelft.nl/en/){target=\\_blank}.

Passionate about travelling, nature and music, he obtained his first diving certificate in 2010 and since then he's been hooked on this sport.
