How to spot the Ghost pipefish when scuba diving
Solenostomus cyanopterus
Found throughout the Indo-Pacific region from the Red Sea and East Africa to southern Japan, throughout Southeast Asia, and south to northern Australia. Most commonly encountered in the Coral Triangle (Indonesia, Philippines, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea).
Seasonal appearance in many locations, with peak sightings often during local dive seasons: Indonesia (especially Lembeh) September-June, Philippines November-June, Thailand November-April. Some species, like the Robust Ghost Pipefish, often appear in mating pairs.
Tropical waters, typically 24-29°C (75-84°F).
Masters of camouflage, found hovering head-down among similar-looking structures. Different species mimic specific items: Ornate Ghost Pipefish often near feather stars or hydroids; Robust Ghost Pipefish near sea grasses or algae; Halimeda Ghost Pipefish among Halimeda algae. Usually found in protected areas with minimal current, from 5-40m depth. Prime locations include Lembeh Strait and Ambon (Indonesia), Anilao and Dauin (Philippines), and Mabul/Kapalai (Malaysia). Careful, slow searching is essential as they're small (5-15cm) and perfectly camouflaged. Excellent buoyancy control is needed to avoid disturbing their habitat.
