How to spot the Denise’s pygmy seahorse when scuba diving
Hippocampus denise
Found exclusively in the Western Pacific Ocean, primarily in the Coral Triangle region (Indonesia, Philippines, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands). Different species have specific ranges within this area. Limited to tropical waters with healthy coral reef ecosystems.
Can be found year-round. Time of day is less relevant as they remain with their host gorgonians. Best visibility conditions often occur during dry seasons, which vary by location (generally: Indonesia May-October, Philippines November-May).
Warm tropical waters, typically 25-29°C (77-84°F).
Incredibly tiny (usually 1-2cm) and perfectly camouflaged on their host organisms. Most species (like Hippocampus bargibanti) live exclusively on specific gorgonian seafans (Muricella species), while others (like H. denise) prefer different coral species. Found at depths from 15-40m, typically on walls or slopes with good current. Require an experienced guide to locate them. A macro lens is essential for photography. Top locations include Raja Ampat, Lembeh Strait, and Komodo in Indonesia; Anilao and Dumaguete in Philippines; Milne Bay in Papua New Guinea. Approach very carefully to avoid damaging the host corals, and never touch or disturb them.
